1000 Places to See Before You Die

17 February 2008 5 Comments
1000 Places to See Before You Die is a New York Times best-selling book
by travel writer Patricia Schultz, which spun off to a documentary TV
series on Discovery Travel and Living, hosted by husband and wife team
Albin and Melanie Ulle.

In the TV show, the couple travels
around the World to showcase the diverse cultures of several amazing
countries and approximately 100 of the 1,000 Places from the book, with
an eye towards unearthing local charms and traditions.

I caught an episode last Saturday night which featured the couple touring enchanting Peru. The show highlighted several key areas of interest in the said country, also as highlighted in the book. The Nazca lines, the city of Cuzco, and the spellbinding Machu Picchu, which deserves its own blog entry.

I dropped by A Different Bookstore Eastwood branch last night and
got a copy of the book. It was a bit pricey at P900 for the paperback
edition, and with not a lot of pictures pa, but still I think it’ll be
worth the hefty premium. I quickly skimmed through the pages to see how
I stack up vs the 1000 haha.. Of course, I’m no seasoned traveler so I
probably haven’t even made it to 2% (approximately 20) of the list.

Anyhow, I glanced through the pages featuring the Philippines and there were 3 entries therein:
1. Banaue Rice Terraces - with the tagline, “Earth Art, Millenia Old”.

  I recall
that this was offered as plum bonus for us folks from P&G to
quickly sign up and accept IBM’s job offer — first team to complete
signatures of acceptance wins a trip to Banawe. Out of about 6 or 7
teams, I think zero was motivated to go for the plum. Haha. It’s just
not as appealing as our Social Studies teachers used to proclaim its
supposed 8th wonder of the world renown. Could it be because of the lack of hoopla?

The good thing about it is, Shultz
(the book author) has only good words to say about the site, and cast
superlatives over the view you’d behold.

2. Taal Volcano - with the tagline, “A Lake Within a Volcano Within A Lake Within an Island”.

Been around the rim, but not anywhere near the volcano yet. Dunno, word
has it that the place smells like horse crap all over. A couple of our
VIP client guests and execs have already been brought to this place and
pushed over to the mouth of the volcano as human offerings, never to
return back. Kidding! haha. But yeah, the VIPs said they enjoyed the
trip.

3. Amanpulo – with the tagline, “Garboesque Isolation on a Private Isle”.

Now this is more like it . My dream local destination hehe. After
experiencing utopian relaxation at Shangri-la Mactan, and looking
forward to Shangri-la Boracay’s opening, Amanpulo would be the next
target conquest. I’ve been dreaming of visiting this place for several
years now.. I’m sure it will be splendid and well worth it.

I can foresee that I’ll be referring to the book more and more as I plan on trips in the future. If you have spare 900 bucks and love to travel, I’d strongly recommend you to buy the book.
