Polland Wintermelon Cake

25 February 2008 2 Comments

Wintermelon cake – that’s the westernized, hipper monicker for what’s more commonly-known as Hopia Baboy. Haha.

I chanced upon Polland and Eng Bee Tin products while doing my weekly
groceries at Shopwise yesterday, so I probed the shelf for anything
worth stashing up my cart.

I noticed the blue packaging of Polland’s
“wintermelon cake”, of which I was naively unaware was hopia baboy
wrapped with a classier name.

Until now, I never knew that hopia baboy did not have any pork
ingredients in it — the label lists the following ingredients:
wintermelons, onion, water, sugar, vegetable oil, and flour. No pork
fat or anything related to Pingping or Majestic Ham. Hehe.

Wintermelon (also called white gourd or ash gourd) is a vine grown for
its very large fruit, eaten as a vegetable in Chinese and other East
Asian cuisines. It is the primary ingredient for wintermelon soup and
the filling of sweetheart cakes (aka wife cakes).

The Chinese characters in the label (水晶餅) literally means “crystal
cake”, presumably because of the translucency of the wintermelon
filling.

I easily swigged 520 calories down my system with the
whole pack of 4 (130 calories per piece). I can feel the back of my
neck reacting to all the shortening and cholesterol hehe. Di bale, minsan lang naman! And I lost weight pa last week because of lack of exercise! Haha palusot
