Fish Out of Water (3/F Greenbelt 5)

7 May 2008 11 Comments

Per somebody’s recommendation, I ditched plans of going to People’s Palace to treat Jepoyzters (who’s vacationing from Taipei) for dinner last Saturday and went to Red Crab’s new resto — Fish Out of Water, at Greenbelt 5.

Interiors
Well-lit, obviously a casual dining place. Not very spacious and does not have its own washroom. Boo!

Food

Complimentary: toasted bread slices with sausage mayo dip. Not bad.

Appetizers: Crispy Baby Squid Caramelized in Orange and Cinnamon. Pungent sweet-tanginess of the orange extract blends well with the crunchy squid. Liked it.

Drinks: Jepoyzters and his Mango Lassi My Grapes Blend. Nothing special, really.. too much ice and not enough grape

Side: Lucban Longganiza Risotto — not memorable. I wonder why the waiter even calls this ‘risotto’ when it doesn’t look like arborio rice was used.

Main Course: Pete’s Maryland Crab and Seafood Boil. Crab, lobsters, prawns, mussels and corn. The night’s biggest disappointment. The lobster and prawns were just so-so, as well as the mussels — but the crab was not fresh at all, its texture not flaky and tender. That’ll teach me from going by the waiter’s recommendation (this was also the most expensive item on their menu). Shame, shame.

Main Course: Baby Back Ribs with Humba Sauce. Now this dish redeemed the place a bit. The toasted mushrooms were good, and as a humba fan (humba is a local Visayan dish of pork simmered in soy sauce, black beans, and sugar) I’d say this pretty much satisfies.

Dessert: Another disappointment — Trio of Creme Brulee (Pineapple, guava, and choc-nut custard with caramelized sugar topping). Only the choc-nut variant was good, the others were nothing special. This is not how desserts should be! Haha..

Price: Midrange, typical of a Red Crab establishment (e.g., Seafood Island, Crustasia)

My verdict: While the humba ribs and the crispy squid were good, overall I can’t say I had as pleasant a dining experience here as I had with Florabel or Nuvo. I should have stuck to my original plan of going to People’s Palace instead.
