on what I learned from my parents..

20 June 2008 10 Comments

In a couple of occasions, I find myself pondering upon the things I learned from my mom and dad whether directly or indirectly. Most of them are stuff I learned by seeing them in action, and not those that they’d consciously teach or instruct.

My dad is one of the most pragmatic people I know. As such, his sense of practicality and risk-aversion has rubbed off to me. I’ve seen him take a cautious stands on several decision points around business and other domestic issues, so my default attitude has always been to err on the safe sides. While my educational and professional exposures have loosened up my natural conservatism, I can’t deny that I’m always more comfortable with the familiar.

Mom, on the other hand, is very generous, compassionate and has a big heart. She is a natural pet-lover, and likes to adopt stray cats and dogs, which irks my dad, and me too sometimes hehe. She gives very generously — to charities, to inaanaks, everyone. That’s why we have such a big gift-giving tradition every Christmas and on birthdays. I can say I learned this value from her, and I make it a point to always bring something for the folks at home whenever I go out of town. During Christmas, if I don’t have the time to shop I’ll just give them angpaos without apprehension.

Perhaps what’s common with my mom and dad are their strong family values. Dad’s worked hard through the years to grow the family business, without care or concern for his personal gain but more to earn convenience for the family — including his siblings and even distant relatives abroad. Mom has a very similar attitude, always looking after my cousins and relatives on her side, providing where they lack.

Add them together and you get something like us, or me at least — a breed of tightly-bonded, conservative, and bighearted individuals with a lot of other individual traits in between.

My parents are not perfect people, but I believe that they are the perfect ones for me. I’m born into this family for the best of reasons, and I’m glad God made it to be so.

-> Belated happy father’s day to my dad and to all the fathers out there!
