Zuni (G/F Greenbelt 5)

9 July 2008 5 Comments
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have lunch at one of Greenbelt 5's most celebrated dining establishments — Zuni, which is right beside Felix and a few [empty] establishments away from Myron's Place.Setting. There's no entry point from within the mall (unlike Myron's), so to get in you'll have to step out of GB5 at the exit nearest to Banana Republic and fronting the chapel. The place has a bright, contemporary design with actual wine bottles adorning the walls — similar to those at Duo in Serendra (Zuni is its sister resto). I liked the cozy interiors and all, but the place seems to be a bit small. Fortunately, there weren't a lot of people lunching at the same time — else it would surely be noisy and not as pleasant.

Now for the food. Appetizer: Zuni Salad. The beef salpicao and shiitake mushrooms were absolutely delectable, and provide a unique taste to this house specialty. Complimentary bread. As is standard in other restos of this price range, they were hot and soft. I wish there were whole wheat variants though. Drink: Fresh Grape Juice. Not the best I tasted (dear sugar, I recognize your camouflage), but the "bubbly" presentation was good. Soup of the Day: Minestrone. I just ordered their soup of the day arbitrarily, thinking it would be some special unique concoction. Oh well, this wasn't so bad anyway. Main Course: Roasted Lapu-lapu Fillet in Pommery Mustard Sauce, served with angel hair aglio-olio and asparagus. This dish I liked. The fish was perfectly roasted, the texture firm and tender. It is also my first time to taste Pommery mustard — a smooth and tasty whole-grained mustard from Meaux, France that is celebrated by culinary aficionados. Dessert: Zuni Obsession (Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and fruit tidbits in cherry sauce). Not being a chocolate person, I just went with the waiter's recommendation and ordered their bestseller. It was okay, but not as good as the famous one at Antonio's Tagaytay… ..pero naubos ko pa rin! Hehehe. Service was generally okay, as expected of a relatively high-end resto. They are obviously overstaffed during lunchtime, but that served to my advantage as there was nary a moment that I needed to consider doing cartwheels just to get their attention (unlike this horrible experience). As I was waiting for dessert though, something started dripping on my hand — I realized I was seated underneath the air conditioning unit that suddenly decided to do some spitting. I reported this to one of the staff, who just advised me to change seats at the same table. No apologies, no complimentary nothing (haha, asa pa ako). Definitely a roll-eyes moment.

Price is in the high end, one of the more expensive ones in my recent foodie adventures. However, in my opinion the fish and the salad were well worth their hefty premiums. Overall Verdict: Zuni should make a nice lunch dating place, and I reckon even better for dinner — what with the garden view and all. I wish the staff had been more customer-oriented (especially with the aircon-spitting incident), but that's pardonable given the circumstances and the good food. I'd gladly come back here if invited (read: if treated or if there's a special occasion, hehe). Catch more of Zuni at MunchPunch and Our Awesome Planet.

Went to Zuni’s last night with my hubby, looking forward to a nice dinner. The place was nice but the food was horrible. Ordered the “Baked Norwegian Salmon in Filo Pastry filled with prawns and mushrooms in creamy peppercorn sauce served with risotto and side salad.” I got a lumpia looking dish. This was definitely more lumpia/fried crepe/baked oslo paper rather tan Filo pastry. Not at all light or flaky. The “prawns and mushrooms’ were nowhere to be found. All i saw was a brownish grey mush filling my “filo” Minced perhaps? Regardless, it was an utter disappointment. The chef decided to spare the salmon from the mincing (bless his soul) but the slice of salmon was thinner than what I usually have as sashimi. I wanted to cry so bad I couldn’t even complain to the staff. I LOVE salmon, prawns and mushrooms!!! Oh ya and the “rissoto” reeked of bullion cubes (come to think of it so did the mushy lumpia filling).

My hubby ordered Canadian Gindara in some kind of sauce. OVERCOOKED!!! what a waste of a good piece of fish. We also had mediocre baked mussels that we had to chew for about five minutes before we can safely swallow each bite.

Hmmm… we spent over 2000 bucks last night. It was the worst use of “date funds” ever!

They must be having a bad day.. I generally had a pleasant experience dining there so I wonder why this happened. Thanks for the comment though, would definitely be worth highlighting this for everyone’s caution.

Good Day. In an industrial society which confuses work and productivity, the necessity of producing has always been an enemy of the desire to create.
I am from Myanmar and too poorly know English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “Cheap tickets to london offers discount airline tickets deals for budget travel to london, the uk and other major cities in europe.”

    Best regards :) , Kasib.
