3 Essential En’s of a leader
I shared this tip at the Leader Readiness class recently (thanks Robert for inviting me over to speak), and I’ve posted this as a comment response as well at a recent entry here at the site; but I feel strongly about turning it into a full-fledged blog post (perhaps for the lack of better stock entries to publish? haha) so here goes. ![]()
Being a leader is a huge responsibility, and I’ve been privileged to be tasked to become one myself. Over the years, by self-experience and by watching those above me, I’ve learned the ropes of this fundamental formula of leadership which I got from my manager, and that which is
applicable to all or most leadership situations: org units, project teams, music bands, and even families.
The 3 Essential En’s of a leader: ENvision. ENable. ENergize.
1. ENvision. Think about the end goal.
Questions to ask:
What is the purpose for your group’s existence?
Where do you want to take it?
Where should you be by a certain time?
What manifestations should be there for you to say, you (or your group) has made it?
How should you and your team think, behave, and act in order to get there?
2. ENable. After clarifying the goal, the leader must prepare, equip, and empower the team in order to reach it.
Questions to ask:
What are their current impediments to success and how can you help remove them?
What are their skill gaps and which avenues can help them hone it?
How are you affecting the team? (do you propel them up or bog them down?)
Are you giving the experts in your team enough room to shine for themselves?
Are the team members able to truly say, “this is mine” about the areas they are tasked to own?

3. ENergize. Make it fun, rewarding, and worth their while.
Questions to ask:
Does your team feel dedicated, excited, and passionate about your vision?
What will make them look forward to every working hour?
What interventions can be put in place that will further excite you and your team?
How can you connect your team’s vision to their life goals?
How are you recognizing, rewarding, and incenting their good performance? Is it working?
Follow the guide questions, answer them as honestly as you can, and plan your course of action around your answers. In no time, you’ll see them flourish ![]()

I am a huge fan of Thai food, and I’m glad I won’t run out of places to get some. Recently, I had my fill at one of the more celebrated local Thai restaurants — chef Colin McKay’s People’s Palace.
