Spices (G/F The Peninsula Manila)

11 October 2008 No Comment

I recently had the chance to dine at Spices, the popular Asian dining establishment at the Peninsula Manila.

Setting. The place is quaint and elegant, with Indian music playing in the background.

From Thailand — the Yam Pla Duk Fu (Catfish Salad with Green Mango) had well-balanced flavors

I had watermelon juice for my drink.

From India — the Nazuk Naan (Naan bread with cheese and cumin seeds) was served with mango, tomato, tamarind, and mint chutneys. I love the mint one the most.

From China — Steamed Chilean Sea Bass in light soy sauce with leeks and sesame.

Served with all-you-can-eat fragrant jasmine rice

The tender, easy-flake fish was yummy. I was sooo full!

I delighted myself with Gula Melaka — Malaysian traditional sago pudding with palm sugar and coconut milk — for my dessert. It was refreshing, sweet, and provided a very good contrast to the flavors of my meal.

Service was becoming of a 5 star establishment — we were served with the kind of unobtrusiveness that I’ve come to expect of the finest restaurants. Price range is at the mid-to-expensive level, at about P2K per head for this full set.

Overall verdict. Spices is a must-visit for Asian food lovers. It’s an easy shoo-in as one of my favorites this year.
