Zong (2/F Trinoma)

23 October 2008 11 Comments

Growing up with Chinese food all around ain’t so bad, as it upped my standards of the its authenticity and taste. Being my comfort food, Chinese cuisine is always a delight to have.

I recently got to dine at Zong, a celebrated Chinese resto, at its Trinoma branch. The setting is nothing like most traditional Chinese establishments, espousing a very modern and chic design. It was very well-lit, appeared spacious, and had an overall positive ambiance.

Here’s the food we had and what I thought of it.

Complimentary roasted peanuts

The hakaw (shrimp dumplings) were not as plump and held-together as those from Xin Tian Di.

The dalandan juice was just too sweet for me.

I’m always up for a well-cooked veggie dish, so we ordered the Sautéed Mixed Vegetables — perfect with rice.

Zong’s Hot Prawn Salad is not the best that I’ve tasted, but I’ll give it points for the relative succulence of the prawns.

The highlight of our meal was their specialty, Pan-fried Chicken Encrusted with Salted Egg. This dish was recommended by Liza, and I’m glad we ordered it. The saltiness of the crust gave life to the tender chicken meat, making for a truly unique delectation. Served with prawn crackers, this is a sure-fire hit with kids and will surely please everybody.

Perhaps the lowlight for me was dessert — we had Mango Sago with Cream and Chilled Almond. The first one was too sweet, the latter was strangely tasteless. They were utterly disappointing.

The service was quite standard for a mall-based establishment — no frills and also nothing exceptional. At around P750 per head, this price point is one of the cheaper ones I’ve seen in my recent foodie trips.

Overall verdict. With the exception of the desserts, Zong does good Chinese food at a reasonable price. I’d say the Pan-fried Chicken dish is worth making the trip.
