Pepper Lunch (Power Plant, Rockwell Center)
I first had a taste of the sizzling goodies of Pepper Lunch in Shinjuku, Tokyo with my friend Wilson early last year, where we dined our hearts out after a tiring day walking around the city.
My American colleague Tim says the local Pepper Lunch franchise is where half of all Power Plant mallers go for lunch, while the other half spreads out across all the other restos. Exaggerations aside, I think his observations prove one point: Pepper Lunch is a total crowd-drawer.

Recently, I met up with my former team at Rockwell Power Plant and had
our fill of Pepper Steaks before the crowd starts to swell.

I ordered the Shimofuri Pepper Steak (P645 with rice and a drink).

The raw beef topped with brown butter came served on a patented sizzling hot plate, with bean sprouts, green beans, and carrots on the side.

After letting it sizzle for a bit, you’re supposed to turn it over to let the other side cook as well.

Can you smell it?

I enjoyed semi-cooking here
. The beef was yummy tender and really flavorful, although I would have wanted it on a little bit rare (as opposed to the medium well that it turned out to be).
I would categorize Pepper Lunch as a semi-self service, quick-serve restaurant, and as such it would understandably have less ambiance and stellar service to speak of. That being said, however, I found the staff to be very helpful, courteously asking us if we knew what to do with our hot plates upon serving. At around P300-700 per head the price range is in the mid to expensive side for an establishment in its class. But then again, the novelty of it all allows for it — despite being somewhat overhyped.
Overall verdict. I enjoyed this meal a lot, even if I smelled like food afterwards. I’ll definitely come back sometime to try the Pepper Rice and the Shake! salads. Come on off-peak hours (before 1130AM or between 230-530PM) so you don’t have to queue up.

im now craving for steak. Pepper Lunch is also well known here in Taipei. Lots of you’ll see lines of people waiting for tables during lunch and dinner.

My sister, our parents and my cousin loves the food in Pepper Lunch. Their first time where they are on vacation in Australia… I haven’t try to eat there but I will definitely love it because I like Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak too.
But I think Pepper Lunch is not that famous here in Manila not like Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak….

Nothing beats a sumptuous feast of a meal at the holy grail of all fine dining establishments in the country, Antonio’s Tagaytay. Even if this meal was free (we were treated out), I’d gladly make the trip and pay up for this.
