Mr. Kurosawa (G/F Eastwood Mall)
Mr. Kurosawa is the latest fusion Japanese cuisine establishment from the Sumo Sam chain (Sumo Sam, John & Yoko). Opening at the new veranda of the Eastwood Mall, the place now attracts a steady stream of diners. We fortunately got to try it out recently, despite not having a reservation in advance.
Setting. The interiors of the place takes after the cuisine’s European-Japanese fusion theme, featuring quirky lighted ceiling posters and modern dining furniture. Below the restaurant sign are two Japanese characters (伝説), which means “legend”, apparently in reference to the legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

My drink was the strawberry Flavored Yakult (P108), which was very refreshing.

Their Spider Roll (P258) was good, but pales in comparison to that of KAI.

I have not tasted anything like the Gyoza Fondue (P278) — deep fried gyoza balls with a cheese fondue dip — and it was quite a treat for an appetizer. This dish epitomizes the Euro-Jap fusion best.

The Spicy Tuna Ledger (P228) is one of their best selling makis, with a mild kick to it.

The Wagyu Rice (P299) is a standard yakimeshi dish, with cubes of wagyu beef.

A lowlight for me was the Steak & Foie Gras (P1399), which, for its price, was not particularly impressive. The beef was a tad tough and unflavorful, bordering medium well despite requesting to be cooked medium rare.

I liked the Issey Sea Bass (P888) dish, served on a yin-yang of green and red sauces. The fish was rich and well-cooked to a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

To end our meal, we first had the Frozen Tiramisu (P168). My co-diners liked it; for me it was nothing special. Furthermore, it was as hard as a rock — even with a steak knife, we had to literally saw through the thing.

On the contrary, I liked the Macha Shiratama (P168), which was green tea ice cream with red beans, mochi balls, jelly strips, and fruits. It was a quintessential Japanese sweet treat.
Service was standard for a restaurant in this price range (around P800-1000 per head). We were warmly greeted and attended to. Some of the order-takers were clearly new, as there were cluelessly lost looks on their faces when we asked about some of their dishes. That said, it’s also worth noting that Mr. Kurosawa has quite an extensive menu — ranging from pizzas, pastas, sushi, steaks, and many more.
Overall verdict. Mr. Kurosawa is an exciting addition to Eastwood Mall’s restaurant row, and offers plenty of good choices for fans of fusion cuisine. I’d recommend this place to folks looking for dependable Japanese fare in the area, and would gladly come back to sample the other menu items.
