145° Fahrenheit Prime Steaks & Seafood (Il Terrazzo Mall)

26 July 2009 One Comment

One rainy weekend night, we trooped to Tomas Morato’s Il Terrazzo Mall to check out all the fuss around 145° Fahrenheit, a steak place that a lot of foodies have been raving about.

Setting. The place is upscale, modern, and warmly-lit, with an al fresco dining area. During our visit, they catered to dating couples as well as a big family, although I think they’re better with smaller groups. The medium-sized round tables look really swanky.

The customary complimentary bread basket

We started off with a Seared Foie Gras (P750)

Everybody enjoyed the Liver Pate with Crostini Chips (P380), except me — not a fan of liver. Its coarse, earthy texture is just not for me.

I loved the Beef Parmesan Arugula Salad (P305 for small) — all the flavors came together very well in this simple concoction.

One of us had been craving Crab Cakes (P980) for quite some time now, so we gave theirs a try. While I was reasonably satisfied with it, everyone else pretty much just felt it was so-so.

The biggest disappointment was my beverage order of Apple Celery (P95), where the celery’s pungent taste overpowered the whole drink. It tasted like cold celery soup.

The highlight of the meal was their house specialty and bestseller, the 145 Tomahawk Chop (P3900 for 46 oz of US Angus), which was really tender and buttery. One bite and I’m pretty much convinced that this is one of the best steaks in town!

On the side: Mashed Potatoes

The Shrimp Pomodoro Spaghettini (P650) had succulent shrimps and al dente spaghettini pasta, which was a little thicker than angel hair and thinner than spaghetti.

Another highlight was the luscious Sea Bass with New Zealand Oysters (P980). The fish was well-seasoned and flaked easily. Really mouth-watering.

Their Mushroom Risotto (P320) was just alright. I liked the rice’s consistency — gooey yet still solid enough for a good bite, but I felt it needed more flavor.

For dessert, we over-ordered and had 2: the first, a gigantic cup of Strawberry Trifle (P310), which was really sweet and creamy.

Our second dessert order was something I liked more — a classic Tiramisu.
Service was good, with just the right level of attentiveness. We were pretty much left to our privacy after all our orders arrived,
with the occasional table clearing and water refill service. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu, although she seemed quite stiff and robotic (would help if she smiled more).

Price: ~P1500-2000 per head.

Overall Verdict. Does the place deserve all the hype? Did our meal rank among the top? I say yes and no to both questions. When 145° Fahrenheit Prime Steaks & Seafood hits the high notes, they do so in the biggest manner. However, a couple of low points with some mediocre dishes prevent it from being one of the best. That said, you can’t go wrong with their bread and butter — the steak — which is a must-try for all carnivorous foodies.
