Kagura Japanese Restaurant (Little Tokyo, Makati)

10 August 2009 One Comment

I had my first taste of Okonomiyaki – Japanese pancakes — back in 2001, at a quaint little restaurant in Kobe. Since then, I have marked the unique dish in my memory; and how can I forget it? What with its appearance, flavor, and aroma!

Fortunately for me, Kagura Japanese Restaurant in Little Tokyo, Makati serves authentic okonomiyaki — so I didn’t hesitate to seek it out when the opportunity came.

Buta Kimchi (P158) — pork with pickled vegetables to get our taste buds in the mood

Torori-Tamago Omusoba (P240) — Japanese fried noodles topped with scrambled eggs. Very rich and well-seasoned.

Tonpei Yaki (P188) — egg omelet with pork and cabbage

Our main event: the Okonomi Special (P350) — with pork, squid, shrimp, egg, and cheese

Okonomi means “as you like it”, while yaki means “to grill” or “to cook”. The pancakes have an egg and cabbage base, floured and mixed with your choice of toppings and glazed with sweet Otafuku Sauce and Japanese mayonnaise.

Good to the last slice!
Setting. Small and simple, with a small (almost cramped) dining space. Its size adds to its rustic and genuine appeal. During lunch service, there were a lot of dining Japanese nationals. Service was good for a mid-range place, we were satisfied with how we were attended to. Price range is around P500 per head.

Overall Verdict. Highly recommended for lovers of Japanese food. If you’re a foodie who has yet to try the savory okonomiyaki, you owe it to yourself to visit Kagura.
