Cav Wine Shop and Café (Bonifacio High Street)

26 September 2009 One Comment

After passing it by several times and reading about it on some publications (DineAsia, Tatler), I finally had the chance to give Cav Wine Shop and Café at Bonifacio High Street a try.

Setting. The restaurant is situated at the side of the Spa building, and is easily spotted because of the big signage. A huge Enomatic wine dispenser greets guests upon entry towards the stately dining area, which has modern European interiors. Some tables are spaced too close to each other, and we were seated on an area where I’d say a diner’s personal space is not rendered comfortable (our table was about only a foot away from the surrounding ones). Overall, the place exudes a refined and elegant ambiance best suited for formal dinner affairs.

We were also graciously offered this complimentary appetizer dish (unfortunately, I can’t remember what it’s called :D )

I loved our appetizer — the Yellow Fin Tuna Carpaccio (P290) in ginger wasabi mayonnaise, with mesclun greens — which has a very velvety texture and invigorating flavor.

Our first main course: Chilean Sea Bass (P850) with corn purée, cherry tomatoes, clams and onion broth. There’s only so much that can be done to a sea bass, but Cav does not disappoint with this dish.

Our Dry Aged US Angus Rib Eye on the Bone (P2950 for 21 oz.), cooked medium rare as I like it.

On the side: Spinach Grain..

..and Country Fries. served on a paper cone.

I didn’t like our first dessert, the Pear Yogurt Panna Cotta (P290), because I found the flavor too tart.

The second one was more like it — Valrhona Chocolate Souffle Cake (P300) — served with grand marnier mixed berry float. It was sinfully rich and sweet, very creamy.

Service was OK. The staff was unobtrusive and attentive, but was not memorably extraordinary. Price: ~P2000-2500 per head, inclusive of a wine card good for two glasses.

Overall Verdict: While Cav offers a classy dining experience with its continental menu selection, I’d only highly recommend the place if you are a wine lover or a prospective wine enthusiast. Everyone else, come here only if you have wads of expendable cash to blow. :)
