Revisiting Apartment 1B (Salcedo, Makati)

6 October 2009 2 Comments

..a must-try for most foodies, but nothing exceptionally spectacular..” — these were the final words I gave Apartment 1B on my review more than a year ago. Recently, an occasion allowed me to revisit the place for dinner, and consequently reassess my overall verdict of the place.

Setting. Casual chic is how I would describe Apartment 1B’s cozy interiors, which looks and feels like a lived-in loft apartment. We sat at the ground floor couch seating this time, which had a semi-open view of the kitchen. Personally, I preferred the relatively more private seats at the loft level, where we were seated on my previous visit.

Here’s what we had and what I thought of them.

Crabcakes Salad (P330) — with fresh lump crabmeat and mustard sauce

I guess this is an acquired taste for me — I didn’t like it during the last visit, but enjoyed it this time.

The House Salad (P280) has mixed greens, walnuts, grapes, and blue cheese, with raspberry vinaigrette

As with the last visit, we ordered a plate of Baked Samosas (P290) — savory pastries filled with mushrooms, spinach and cheese. The pastry was flaky and crisp, complemented well by the moist and tasty filling.

My Dalandan Juice (P120) amidst glasses of water

The Spaghetti Vongole (P370) with Manila clams was a pleasant surprise. Pasta was al dente, and the white wine + garlic olive oil sauce fused the flavors together well.

A whole rack of Baby Back Ribs (P920) in honey bourbon marinade, served with mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. The meat was sweet and smoky, and has a fall-off-the-bones tenderness.

A taste of the bone marrow from Apartment 1B’s Osso Buco (P850) dish is enough propel you to cholesterol heaven. It was very rich and flavorful, and the beef was perfectly cooked on the meaty tomato base. Delicious!

Of course, who goes to Apartment 1B and forgets to have their famous Homemade Meatloaf (P470)? Certainly not us, as we had 2 orders of it that night. Served with mashed potatoes, sauteed vegetables, and mushroom gravy, the half-inch thick loaf was very filling and tasty. Everybody who had a bite was won over.

I was not particularly excited over Apartment 1B’s desserts before, but I found myself enjoying how my meal was capped this time. We had the rich and creamy Toblerone Cheesecake (P220),

..the surprisingly pleasant-tasting Carrot Cake (P170),

..and the Frozen Pie (P190), which emerged to be my favorite of the three.

As with my last visit, service was good. The wait staff was knowledgeable and courteously attentive without any obtrusiveness. Price: ~P800-1000 per head.

Overall verdict. I may still maintain that there is “nothing exceptionally spectacular” with the Apartment 1B dining experience, but the place does render what’s deemed to be ordinary in a comfortably consistent manner. The menu has not changed a lot over the past year, nor did their quality of food and service. The dishes herein seem to have a tendency to grow on the patrons, as they did so with me. True to the cliche of being sweeter the second time around, Apartment 1B wins me over this time. Still a “must-try for foodies“. :)
